SABIS® System

SABIS® Educational System

All courses taught at SABIS International School UK are part of the comprehensive SABIS® Educational System. This system has been developed, refined, and tested for over a century. It draws on a comprehensive and rigorous curriculum that emphasises a well-balanced body of knowledge, skills, and experiences.

SIS-UK provides a superior learning environment in a caring, international community. Through the SABIS® Educational System, SIS-UK provides a cohesive, motivational, and exciting program for all its students, plus offers a unique approach to international education.

SABIS®’s approach to student development is exemplified through the three pillars of the “The SABIS® EDGE”: Academics, Self-Development, and Life Preparation.

Teaching Methods

All courses are clearly structured to enable students and teachers to identify precisely what should be learnt. The whole class is taught together, using the SABIS Point System®. The key concepts of a lesson are listed, and each of these is taught interactively, alternating oral work, individual written work, and group checking. Class time is utilised for building a solid foundation of knowledge through interacting, analysing, forming and expressing opinions, and engaging in effective discussions. These discussions are based on critical thinking and logical reasoning.

The various teaching methods used and the pace set stimulate students by keeping them interested and channelling their enthusiasm. When in class, students learn actively: they do not simply listen to lengthy explanations or take dictated notes.

Monitoring/Evaluation

Assessment at SIS-UK helps identify student mastery of essential concepts before they move on to new material. The frequent and thorough testing helps to ensure the understanding of concepts taught and helps prevent the formation of learning gaps.

Assessment at SIS-UK takes three forms

  1. SABIS Academic Monitoring System® tests (SABIS® AMS): These are multiple-choice, computer-scored examinations in grades 7-12. They test information in English, maths and science and are administered on a weekly basis.
  2. Periodic Exams: These written tests include a mixture of multiple-choice and written questions. Students sit for two to four periodic exams per term in each subject in grades 7-12.
  3. End-of-Term Exams ('Finals'): These exams are written three times yearly and include information taught over an extended period of time. 'Finals,' as they are commonly referred to, contain both multiple-choice and short answer/essay questions and are taken in all subjects in grades 7-12.

Frequent assessment, along with a comprehensive reporting system, allows school officials to monitor students' performance and pinpoint gaps that need to be filled to secure a solid foundation on which to build further knowledge. The testing prepares students for sustained mental effort over long periods of time. Testing also reinforces knowledge and prepares students to successfully face and tackle difficult situations under time constraints.
